Can I give my dog Promethazine for vomiting (have 25mg tabs)

Customer Question

Can I give my dog Promethazine for vomiting (have 25mg tabs)? She is an 80lb. Amererican Bulldog who is nauseated and without appetite; lethargic. We have been to the vet today with no result and no meds given. She had a "low grade" temp. Vomits everytime she drinks (bright yellow) but of course we encourage fluids.

Hi, thanks for your question. Did the veterinarian run any tests today?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
Yes, all blood work was normal. RBC's on the high side of normal. Temp on the high side of normal.

OK, thanks. Were any x-rays taken?

no

OK, thanks. Certainly, if this problem is not improving within 24 hours, x-rays are vital to the diagnostic process, because there could be a blockage in the digestive tract, a condition that can be fatal if left untreated.

Promethazine can be used in dogs, 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet would be the usual amount for an 80 pound dog, but I must caution you that oral medicines are seldom effective when vomiting is occurring, and we often need to use injectable anti-nausea medicines.
