Hello,

Dogs can have Benadryl if they are not taking any other medications and have no other conditions. The dose is 1-2mg. per lb. of body weight, given 3 or 4 times a day. The usual starting dose is at the lower end of that range, so a 25 lb. dog would receive one 25 mg. tablet or capsule. Be sure to give only plain Benadryl.

You may also want to check your local pet store for topical medications, such as a cortisone cream that decreases itching, or the bad-tasting products made to keep dogs from licking. Giving him a favorite chew toy or a filled Kong toy can also help distract him.

If none of these measures helps, and he's licking enough to irritate his skin, it would be best to consult your vet again. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope your dog will recover uneventfully.
