Is moist and meaty okay for dogs?

Resolved Question:

Is moist and meaty okay for dogs?

Hi,
Although meat is the first ingredient listed in most of the varieties of Purina's Moist and Meaty dog foods, which is good, the second ingredient in most, is 'high fructose corn syrup' which is not good, and they also contain wheat, soy, gluten, artificial preservatives like ethoxyquin, which has been deemed a carcinogen, and this is not healthy for dogs.

If you can find a dog food with meat as it's first ingredient and no artificial colors/flavors or preservatives, this would be healthiest for your dog. Wellness, Innova, Canidae, Newman's Own, Halo, and Blue Buffalo are just some of the well recommended brands which contain superior ingredients. They are available at major pet supply stores.

What is a good quality dry dog food that my dog will love and that is tasty to her?

Expert:  Cher replied 7 years ago.

Hi,
I'm so glad you asked this. Wellness, Innova, EVO, Candiae, Halo, Newman's Own, and Blue Buffalo are some very good quality dry foods that are tasty and healthy. You can find many more at your pet supply store; just learn to read the label--real meat listed first, NO corn, soy, gluten, wheat, dairy products, meat by-products, artificial colors/flavors or preservatives. Natural preservatives like 'tocopherols' (vitamin E) are fine.

Last question - out of the ones you mentioned which one do dogs like the most?

Expert:  Cher replied 7 years ago.

Hi again, and thanks for your reply.
All dogs have different preferences, so there is no one right answer to this, but it's been my experience that they like the taste of Wellness, Blue Buffalo, and Halo.

What do you think of biljac dry food promide?

Expert:  Cher replied 7 years ago.

Hi again,
These are the ingredients in Bil Jac dog food:
"Chicken By-Products (Organs Only including chicken liver), Chicken, Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Brewers Dried Yeast, Cane Molasses, Egg Product, Salt, Sodium Propionate (a preservative), DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Niacin, Biotin, Choline Chloride, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Menaione, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganous Oxide, Inositol, BHA (a preservative), Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Potassium Iodine, Sodium Selenite."
As you can see, chicken by-products is the first ingredient, and corn is the third, followed by chicken by-product meal. 'Meal' is a ground, dried form of the ingredient. Bil Jac is not a quality dog food. Meat by-products are those that are deemed unfit for human consumption. You want to look for 'human grade' ingredients in your dog's food.

How is Royal Canin?

Expert:  Cher replied 7 years ago.

Royal Canin has a good reputation, but many, many varieties and prescription foods for dogs with specific health problems.
As long as you check labels, and look for real meat listed first, with no grain fillers, no artificial preservatives, you'll be choosing a good food.
