My great dane 18 months old has had fever for 2 1/2 days of

My great dane 18 months old has had fever for 2 1/2 days of about 103/103.5 he is since last night on CEFA 500mg 3 pills twice a day and CIPROFLAXIN 750mg 1 pill twice a day his blood lab test show an abnormal count of white cells, same in his urine, does not have apetite and drinks a lot of water, shulod keep him under observation at home or should I take him to a Vet. Hospital.

Dear XXXXX

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear that your dog is having problems. I understand how diffiult it is when you dog is not feeling well, especially when they are so young.

Now that he has been on antibiotics and hasn't improved, the next step is to take him to seen an internal medicine specialist for more testing. Things that can cause a fever include:

  • Some type of infection
  • A lot of inflammation
  • Cancer (it can happen even in a young dog)
  • An over active immune system
  • Exposure to a toxin (less likely in your dog's case)
Testing that would be recommended may include:
  • Chest x-ray
  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Urine culture
  • +/- blood cultures
  • Joint taps
  • +/- spinal tap
It is unlikely that you will find an internist to take him to today, therefore, I would at least call your family veterinarian and see if they want to see him today, or can set you up for a referral on Monday.

In the mean time, please keep an eye on his temperature. If his temp is over ~ 104.5, he should likely be hospitalized on IV fluids.
