I have a approx. 9 y.o. female golden, about 65lbs. she has bad storm fear and will attempt to dig herself a hole regardless of the ground cover (tile, concrete, carpet, etc.). Can I give her one of my xanax and if so at what dosage/lb ratio?
Optional Information: Age: 9; Female; Breed: golden ret.Already Tried: b. mod., crate, created a "cave", dark contained space, ignoring her behavior. Pretty much the full gamet. She is a rescued golden and was found along the road w/o a collar at approx 2 y.o. She has always had this reaction to storms.
Hi Stuart, Sometimes fear of thunderstorms can be alleviated by the way you react to her during the storms. If you go about your business like nothing unusual is happening, then she'll feel relaxed and won't become as anxious. Here is more information on anxiety in dogs, caused by thunderstorms and other causes: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=1042#answer_1 As you can see, homeopathic remedies can be successful, but if you'd like your dog to take Xanax, this must be prescribed by your vet. I would not give her one of your Xanax without first consulting the vet. You can read more about this medication, including dosage and adverse side effects/drug interactions: http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/alprazolam-xanax/page1.aspx I hope things will improve, soon!
