my dogs teeth chatter

Customer Question

ok you know how a person's teeth chatter when it's cold out?
well my dog's teeth will do this randomly for no apparent reason. he could be lying around with or we could be taking a walk or he could have just woken up and his teeth will "chatter". we live in southern california so it never gets cold enough to make my teeth chatter, so i know he's not cold. when it happens he gets this look on his face like he's not sure what is happening or why his teeth are 'chattering' and saliva kinda accumulates. but the chatter never lasts long enough for him to actually accumulate drool or 'slobber' when i have seen this happen i try to soothe him, but it doesn't seem to be a nervous reaction to anything, becuase the chatter won't stop, what should i do?

He may do this when he scents an odor he likes. Dogs have a 'taste/smell' organ in the roof of their mouth and often they chatter their teeth as they pull a scent into their mouths to taste it.
Some dogs also chatter teeth when having dental pain or can do this due to a partial or focal seizure in the brain.
You can read about focal seizures here
Hope this helps you!
