Ear infection that ruptured the ear drum might cause deafness so could injury or degeneration of the nerves in a senior dog.
You can read here about deafness in dogs
If this is from infection or ear mites or a debris clogged ear etc vet treatment could restore some hearing but not always.
A deaf dog has to be kept more secure as it can't hear things approaching it such as cars, bikes, people etc.
But in a fenced yard you can shine a maglight type flashlight or laser pointer on the ground in front of the dog to catch the dog's attention so it will turn and look at you for a hand signal for what you want it to do.
In the house you can tap the floor with your foot to catch the dogs attention too.
Hope this helps you!
