Its simply a dog with ancestry that goes back to a particular kennel's breeding of the breed. A famous fighting dog had the name 'gator' which was short for Alligator and dogs with that one in their pedigree or bloodline would be considered a 'gator' dog. Though most would really only consider a dog a 'gator' if it was similar in physical ways to the famous dog.
Its a bit like calling a collie dog a 'Lassie' collie because it has a look of the dog that was used on the tv show.
