Elbow dysplasia can cause inflammation in the elbow area. You can read about this issue here
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1570&articleid=431
Hygromas which are big swellings on the elbow area can be caused by repeated pressure put on the area. You can read about this here on a site that sells a padding product
http://www.dogleggs.com/files/hygroma.cfm
You may find a softer bed in the house and perhaps if the dog spends time in the yard a bed for the yard will help too. I like the coolaroo beds as they hold up well despite their low cost

Hope this helps you!
