is it safe for dogs to eat gourds

Customer Question

I have gourds that I grow in the garden and this year my boston terrier who is 1 1/2 yrs. old decided that he wants to use them as chew toys. I wouldn't mind only I don't know if they are safe for him or if they are poisonous.

Gourds are not poisonous but the can be dangerous if he is eating them. The risk is for an intestinal obstruction from eating stuff he won't digest well. If he chews them up well though they may just act as extra fiber.
You might see if a couple of apples tossed in the yard will be a better choice for him to chew on.
Hope this helps you!
