Customer Question

How long can a dog go without a bowel movement? We are trying house train our dog. We kreep him in a crate when we cannot supervise him. It has been 18 hours since his last elimination. Is he constipated or just stubborn? By the way, he's a Cairn Terrier.

Hi there,
Usually a dog will deficate once to twice a day depending upon how many times a day you feed them. If your dog goes more than 24 hours without deficating then contact your regular vet. Small dogs are the hardest to train. I finally got some puppy potty pads and it worked with my boston terrier. You could try training her with these. Crating a dog is a good thing, but there are more reasons as to why you should teach your dog about crates. It gives them a sense of security. Also take your dog out to go potty after every meal and everytime they sleep you should take him out when they awaken. Always take them to the same spot to relieve themselves. They like to be on routines. And most of all have patience. You will get him trained. Some dogs take longer to learn. If you find my answers helpfull please click on the accept button.
