My dog has a hard lump on his stomach just below his left rib. what is this from?

Is it about where a belly button would be?

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: no, its off to the side about where the curve of the ribcage is. i cant tell if it is above the ribs or below, but it sticks out a bit and is hard.

This might be a 'floating rib' or it could be a cyst of some sort.
A floating rib is the unattached thirteenth and last rib. Sometimes they stick out oddly.
If this is new you should probably mention it to your vet. If its getting bigger (measure it with something you know the size of) then see the vet specifically about this.
