What could cause my dogs face to swell up

my dog's face has started to swell up around the eyes and mouth. the swelling goes down, and then comes right back.

It sounds like it might be an allergic reaction.
You can see if using Benadryl at a dose of 1mg per pound of dog will help. A 50 pound dog would get two plain 25mg Benadryl tablets for example.
Only plain Benadryl will do not a cold capsule type.
Another possibility is a tooth abcess which might cause the swelling and then go down if the abcess drains some.
