Dogs do not get a period they have a heat season. Dogs cycles run on progesterone not on estrogen like human cycles.
Normally a dog heat lasts about 3 weeks during which time you must keep the female away from males if you do not plan puppies.
They come in season about every 6 months but all dogs are individuals and cycles can vary.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I KNOW DOGS GO INTO HEAT BUT SHE DOES BLEED LIKE A PERIOD. SHE ONLY BLEEDS FOR ABOUT A WEEK. IS THAT NORMAL FOR AN OLDER DOG??    DO THEY GET CRAMPS??? IF SO, IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO EASE THEM??

They bleed for about a week, they then have a straw colored or clear discharge for about a week and this can be their most fertile time.
The final week they are going out of season and discharge will stop.
They can have a tummy ache from the hormonal flux, they often urinate more to spread the sexual pheromones around. If she is super uncomfortable you can try a heating pad for her to lie on set on low. Exercise may make her feel better but keep her away from male dogs the whole 3 weeks.
I would not give her anything as aspirin might make her bleed more and that is the only safe over the counter medication for pain in dogs.
