ODD SMELL ON DOGS COAT

Customer Question

MY SIBERIAN HUSKY (7 YR SPAYED FEMALE) HAS BEGUN EMITTING A FOUL SOUR SMELLING ODOR ON HER COAT. WHEN I BATHE HER IT RETURNS SHORTLY. USUALLY A FASTIDIOUSLY CLEAN ANIMAL. TOOK HER TO VET, FECAL NORMAL, TEMP NORMAL, VET PERPLEXED. PLEASE ANYTHING YOU CAN TELL ME WILL HELP. THIS WORRIES ME IMMENSELY. NOT BECAUSE OFTHE SMELL BUT BECAUSE I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE DOGS INTERNAL HEALTH.

When a dog stinks, there three main culprits. They are the teeth, ears and skin.

Teeth - Even if your dog is young, he can have serious dental disease or a foreign object stuck in his teeth. Even puppies should be taught about good dental hygeine. You can use a soft bristled tooth brush and brush his teeth. If you start it now, he'll tolerate it better when he's older. All dogs over one year of age should be taken in for regular dental cleanings to promote good health.

Ears - don't be afraid to look inside. If you see black stuff, it's probably not dirt. It's probably an infection.

Skin - there are tons of skin infections, fungal infections and other problems that can happen with the skin. You should see your vet for a skin scraping and checkup to rule out skin disorders.

And don't forget the anal glands. If the anal glands are full, swollen, leaking, it can cause a bad smell. Get your vet to show you how to care for the anal glands. They can be expressed at home after someone shows you how.

If your shampoos are not working, you should see the vet for a diagnosis and proper medications.

I would check thyroid values to see if they were off. See this site about thyroid problems in your breed
http://siberianhuskyhealthfoundation.org/health.asp
I would also see if the dog food you are using smells a bit like the bad odor you detect.
Many times the food is the culprit when dogs have an odd odor. You may find swapping to another food will resolve the problem. Foods such as California Natural, Evo, Blue Buffalo, Canidae, Wellness Fish and Potato etc from pet supply stores may resolve the problem for you. I'd particularly look for one with different grain and fat sources.
I know that I can detect an odor in my dogs that have gotten cancer too. My vet cannot smell it but I can. I hate to suggest that to you though as a possibility.
I would seriously consider checking into the thyroid and the food as possibilities.
Hope this helps you!

Thank you.

I will access web site immediatly. My dog has been on Science Diet dog food her entire life so I doubt that is the problem. But I will check into it. After checking the web site I will take her to have her thyroid values checked out. I am different with my dogs then most people. I can detect the slightest change in temperment and health and try to resolve the problem in the earliest of stages.

Sincerely yours,

Marsha

A good site to compare dog foods is this one
www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=comp-wiz
and another one is this one which also has some articles about what is in dog food.
http://www.doberdogs.com/menu.html
Most people don't rate Science diet very highly anymore though once folks thought it was the best.
My problem is I usually bring the dogs in about 2 weeks before the vet can find a clinical problem so I know what you mean!
