What can we do now to help our 15 year old poodle

Customer Question

Last night we took our 15 year old toy poodle to the emergency vets because he appeared to be in recurring pain. Every hour or so, he would jump up and yelp and then try to walk although it looked like he was cramping or having problems with his right front leg. They gave him a shot of buprenorphine and sent us home with tramadol hydrochloride to give him each 2 - 3 hours. Since midnight last night, he hasn't yelped in pain. However, he is pacing the floor around the house and hasn't taken any naps since 8 pm yesterday. He is usually a true lap dog but doesn't want me or my husband to touch him. We finally got him to eat a few bites about half a hour ago and he has drank a little water. The blood work last night showed: CBC normal; chem panel - albumin slightly elevated, bun slightly elevated, tbil slightly elevated. Diagnosis was neck pain and stiffness, slight rear limb ataxia. Could have a pinched nerve or a ruptured cervical disc. The notes tell us to restrict exercise for 7 days but he has been walking constantly and struggles if we try to hold him. I tried putting him in a pet carrier thinking he would go to sleep as he is swaying on his legs, but he only whimpered so I let him out after about 10-15 minutes. Our vet won't be in until tomorrow. Is there anything we can do to get him to rest?

I would crate him even though he whimpers. Call it tough love but keeping it him quiet is more important that him wimpering. The crate should be big enough that he can stand up and turn around in it.
You might also try calling the emergency vet and seeing if they have some additional advice.
Hope he feels better soon and please don't hestitate to ask further questions. Hope this is helpful.

Reply to Viv Graves's Post: Thank you for your help. I've taken him back to the emergency vets. Although none of his problems are currently solved, they did give him another shot and at least he's resting now. They did x-rays this time and he has an enlarged heart and they think some neurological problems, so I don't really know what the outcome is going to be. This little fellow is like a baby to us so I would ask that anyone reading this keep us in their thoughts and/or prayers.
