Boxer: fever (103) and stopped eating - lethargic..panting..Vet gave

This answer was rated:

My 3 yr old Boxer suddenly started running a fever (103) and stopped eating - lethargic - light panting. Vet gave her Denosyl and Doxycycline Tabs - did no good - losing weight rapidly - blood platelets low - x-rays show nothing - she is just wasting away...still at vets getting blood sampled twice a day...any suggestions
If the vets did not check for tick carried diseases such as erlichia or lyme then that might be worth checking into.
I'd be tempted to have either an ultrasound or a endoscope done to see if any lesions in the abdominal wall can be spotted that way. Or any soft foreign bodies stuck in the stomach. Many things won't show on x-ray such as string, socks etc. or in the case of my dog a latex rubber toy that got swallowed filled with stomach fluids and couldn't pass in any direction.

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I did forget to say that she has had constant diarrhea - from the time it started. Although we live in the country - she had no tick contact as far as I know - at least we never removed one. She usually does not chew on anything except the rawhide chews - but it still could be something internal -
A deer tick you might never have seen and they drop off when they are done feeding.
With diarrhea I'd be tempted to see if the vet was willing to try a course of Flagyl (Metronidazole) as sometimes that resolves non specific gastric illnesses.
Histiocytic ulcerative colitis (HUC) is a disease known in boxers. You can read some questions and answers about this here
http://www.boxerrescue.com/askthevet/Digestive.html
If she had any opportunity to get into anything toxic such as antifreeze or poison bait of some sort talk to your vet about that. If the rawhide chews she gets are not US made and if she had one recently that could be a source of toxins too. Again talk to your vet about it.
If she has been anywhere to be around other dogs or places other dogs have left stools it could be something like this too

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I appreciate the answers but only the suggestion about the Flagyl has posssibilities - she does not have symptoms of colitis...could be a tick...
she is still rapidly losing weight - being fed intravenously.
Sometimes you never find out and all you can do is supportive care and then suddenly the dog begins to get better.
My oldest dog the Flagyl worked for and cooking for him - yep the dog managed to eat some steak, some hamburg, some chicken, some potato one day, some sweet potato another, some rice another day and then suddenly he decided he could eat again.
We have no idea what caused it. Three weeks of him being off with fever, losing weight and no sign of any disease other than he wasn't eating and was sick. Very scary stuff so I know where you are at!
Along with the Flagyl I think the supplements we used helped him a lot - we used NutriCal and VitaStat which are dog nutritional supplements that come in a tube and you can stick the stuff right in their mouths so they swallow it. They have enough calories to keep a dog going while you work on solving the real problem. Maybe that would help your dog some too.
I hope your dog pulls through ok!
