dog: My 12 year..12 year old..vet put him on proin 8 days

This answer was rated:

My 12 year old dog was recently newtered and has developed an incontenence proplem. The vet put him on Proin 8 days later he is still leaking in his sleep. What can I do.
There are a couple of things you can do while the vet is working on helping you with the problem (make sure the vet has checked the prostate).
You can put incontinance pads under or on top of his regular bed to catch any leakage if he always sleeps on a particular spot.
You can also make a belly band for him using a soft length of cloth and the incontinance stick on pads such as Poise pads. put the pad lengthwise on th cloth, wrap the cloth around him with the pad over the critical anatomy and then safety pin it over his back. There are commercial versions of these belly bands available but mostly for small dogs so if he is bigger you may need to make your own.
Or you can see if you can adapt the mens incontinance diapers to him.
This will keep the floors and carpets clean while you work on a medical solution.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I have been using pads where he sleeps, I am more interested now in stopping the leakage. For instance, since we neutered him and took away his testosterone, perhaps we should replace it. Thank you. Ann
For that you need to go back to your veterinarian for continued care and alternative medications such as androgens.
If your dog is overweight thinning him down may help too.
In all the dogs I've had neutered at any age I've never had any male be incontinent afterwards(and I do rescue and any pet pups I sell go spayed or neutered so I have gotten a lot of dogs altered at all ages!)
From this site I found this info
http://www.vin.com/proceedings/Proceedings.plx?CID=WSAVA2004&PID=8703&O=Generic
"In comparison with the bitch, the condition is less likely to respond to medical therapy. The pathophysiology of male urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence is poorly understood, making rational treatment difficult.
Drugs used in it's management include androgens, oestrogens and alpha-adrenergics. Of these, alpha-adrenergics gave the best results but, even then, more than half of the dogs failed to respond to therapy. Attempts have been made to relocate the intrapelvic bladder neck to an intra-abdominal position. These have mainly involved pexy of the deferent ducts to the abdominal wall (Weber et al 1997) although the author has used prostatopexy (in castrated males) to the prepubic tendon. As with medical treatment, the impression in a limited number of cases is that surgical treatment alone of urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence is less successful in males than in bitches."

This site also goes seriously into treatments including charts of medications that might help

Hope this helps you more than the other did! If you had asked for medical info I'd have dug that up for you instead of offering management and care information.

You are welcome - and I'm glad you were more concerned about the dog than about the floors in your home!
