Rat terrier vomiting

Customer Question

Hello, My name is XXXXX XXXXX I have a 4 year old rat terrier named Cujo. About 3 years ago he began to develop a condition where he has breathing problems and vomits often. After seeing many vets they have determined he may have a condition called mystina gravis, X-rays show he has an enlarged esophogus, and say his condition is not likely to improve and is gradually getting worse. I have tried many things, different diets, feeding him elevated, nothing seems to work. He is a happy good natured dog, but feel he is suffering. Do you have any suggestions? Is it humane to keep him in this condition?

Thank you,
Jason

What tests have been done and were they done by a specialist or internist?

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: He was tested at Animal Referal Center, in Fountain Valley by an internist for several days, allegy tests originally, then tested for mystina gravis. He was put on Cephalexin.

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: Thanks again, info you provided was very helpful One thing that I did notice is he does get aspiration pneumonia once every couple of months, discharging a yellow fluid from his lungs. At such times I feed him in a dog high chair so as he eats upright and still for half hour after eating.

Sincerely,

Jason

I would feed him elevated all the time.Chest level is a good height. Anytime they have a megaesophagus or collapsing trachea that is very helpful. Soaking his food prior to eating will also help.
