HELP with my doggie

Customer Question

my dog has been diagnosed with kennel cough. she was prescribed 500 mg 2 tablets twice a day of cephalexin and then 20mg 2 tablets twice a day of prednisone.   i believe that it is the prednisone that has made my dog extremely thirsty and having to frequently urinate.

the cough seems to have subsided a lot but has not disappeared. i am uncomfortable with the amount of water and frequent urinations....can the prednisone be discontinued?

No. You should continue the prednisone at the prescribed dosage until it is time to step down from the medication. Discontinuing use of the steroid can cause problem if you don't step down gradually from it.

Prednisone is a steroid and it DOES cause increased thirst and urination. This is normal. The symptoms will improve with time or when you stop the meds.

Let me know if you have more questions about this.

thanks for your reply...however, i am visiting my parents and with a vet whom i do not know..and is not the regular vet whom i use.   the vet never talked about "gradually stepping down from the drug"....the directions clearly state give 2 tablets by mouth twice a day for 7 days."

what should i do?

blessings to you.

I am surprised to hear that the vet doesn't want to taper them...

You might want to give them a call and ask if there would be fewer side effects when you stop the dosage if you taper them off.

I would continue using them for the rest of the prescription. They do give the dog a lot of relief from the cough.
