Customer Question

How much should it cost to repair a cruciate ligament rupture in a 55 pound lab/beatle mix dog. He is 11 yrs old.
My dog came up from the back yard about a month ago and start holding up his left leg. I went to a vet a couple of days later and paid $185.00 for a xray and 15 Deramaxx pills. The vet said it would cost between $1800 to $2500 to repair the ligament. (I can't pay that much)
My dog does not seems to be in any pain and gets around as go as he can on three legs including stairs. I have since change his food to lose 5 or so lbs. He is just a little bit overwieght and started giving him 2 glucosamine (750mg)/chondroitin (600mg)

Unfortunately costs vary widely.
In my area with a small dog I got a repair done for $500 and someone else paid $2000.
You can shop around in your area and see if there is a vet school or orthopedic vet who will do the procedure for less.
You have to be wary as there is more than one type of surgery done to fix this kind of injury and some are better than others.
You can read about the TPLO surgery which I think is currently considered the best here
http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/tplo.htm
and stories of people who went through this with their dogs can be found here
http://www.lauriebryce.com/tplo/stories.html
and here
www.lauriebryce.com/tplo/after.html
If you want to do the surgery but can't afford a lump sum payment talk to your vet about ways to lower the cost, about time payment plans etc.
You also want to discuss the added value to the dog's life. If your dog has kidney or heart problems for example you may not want to do more than alleviate pain for your pet as surgery might be too much on the dog's system.
The glucosamine is great and may well help. You might want to also try Glycoflex to add to that as that can augment the help the glucosamine gives.
Hope this helps!
