Dog vomitting

Customer Question

My 1.5 year old mixed breed (Beagle/Husky) dog has been vomitting for 5 days. The vet did x-rays, and CBC tests that all came back negative. She has been on IV fluids and anti-nausea medicine. She is eating chicken baby food and 10 minutes later is still vomitting. They are thinking it is gastroentiritis, but the treatment is not working. What can I do for her to drink and eat without vomitting? Are there tests that the Vet can/should have done?

Try lamb or beef baby food. If for any reason she has developed an intolerance to chicken then that could be the problem.
Try pedialyte in her water bowl instead of water or mix 1 liter water with two tablespoons sugar and one teaspoon salt to see if she holds that down better. The sugar will give her a little energy and the salt will help her retain fluids.
My vet sometimes gives a dog ill like this Flagyl also known as Metronidazole to help calm the stomach. It also can help if the problem is a parasite like Giardia causing the problem.
If you have access to a clinic where they can do an endoscopy of the stomach to see if there are any items in there that don't show on x-ray but are causing a problem that might be a possible test to do.
They did check for megaesophagus right? You can read about that problem here - http://www.marvistavet.com/html/megaesophagus.html
But if your dog likes to eat soft toys and you are missing any or parts of any then you might suspect something got swallowed that isn't showing on x-ray but is causing her a problem.
A soft item like a sock or towel can cause a blockage but not be seen on x-ray unless the vet used barium to make it visible. A soft item can even cause an intussusception of the intestines, a telescoping of the intestines back on itself which blocks all passage through the bowels.
With my dog it was a latex rubber squeaky toy swallowed whole. She couldn't pass it and she couldn't throw it up once it got filled with stomach fluids and expanded.
They do make paste nutrients that you can give a dog. Products like Nutristat, Vitastat and Dyne and others if the dog can keep them down will help her out nutritionally. They come in a tube and they don't have to get much to get needed calories, vitamins and minerals etc.
Hope this helps!
