This sounds like something known as seasonal flank alopecia - which means the hair on the side gets thinner or is gone at certain times of the year.
Sometimes a thyroid problem can be involved but sometimes its just a hereditary issue.

this site says its common in bulldogs
Melatonin may help the dog regrow the coat. Talk to your vet or a veterinary dermatologist about appropriate dosage etc.
Hope this helps!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: Thank you for your effort.. and I should have been more specific with my question.. the problem is not seasonal.. it showed up when she was about 18 months, and has persisted every since.

She gets annual physicals, and the vet has not mentioned a thyroid issue, so perhaps it's hededitary. If it is, they is there any remendy?

You might try the melatonin to see if that helps.
The dog I had with the seasonal problem (different breed than yours) was bald at certain points and very thin the rest of the year. She sure looked funny with her tanned skin along her flank and long hair all over the rest of her! At that time I ran all the bloodwork to check for thyroid or hormone dysfunction and found nothing. I'd have tried the melatonin if that knowledge was available then.
The reason I still suggest melatonin is this - dogs shed and lose hair based on the amount of daylight they get. With our after sunset lighting going year round the dogs get more light than they would naturally which can lead to shedding year round instead of seasonally (though it does get heavier spring and fall for most dogs).
You may also want to run bloodwork to rule out a thyroid issue. This talks about that problem and you can see if your dog shows any other signs that might match up to it

I can tell you that all dogs have less coat on their flank area to some degree or another but if on your dog it seems excessively so then it might be an indicator of another problem. If you know the breeder you could check and see if its a hereditary issue and if her parents have the same problem.
If you want to try a food supplement to see if that promotes hair growth the product Derm Caps has all the fatty acids needed to help with that and might be all you need to do.
Hope this helps!
