Help no one is sleeping!!! our dal..Vet took..chest xray &..cough meds

Customer Question

Help no one is sleeping!!! Our Dal. has been coughing for a week now. The Vet took a chest xray & said she has bronchitus & sent us home with cough meds that don't seem to be helping. How long can this coughing last & should I seek more help.

If it's not clearing up with the cough suppressant, you need to return to the vet to discuss possible antibiotics.

Some dogs can recover from a cough on their own and other dogs can't.  Some need long term antibiotics.

Since it has been a week, you should return to the vet tomorrow or give them a call to discuss your options.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Does the chest xray pretty much show what is causing the coughing? Should any other tests be done? And how long can this last??

There can be a lot of reasons for a cough.

If she has been boarded at a kennel recently, it could be kennel cough, a common respiratory illness that is highly contagious.  Even if animals have been vaccinated, they will still get it if they are exposed.

Aside from that, tracheal problems and heart problems can also cause coughing, as can a general virus.

Any time that I hear of an older dog coughing, I immediately think of a heart problem, especially if the dog is not on heartworm prevention.

You should be pretty concerned.  I think that you should make an appointment with your vet as soon as you are able.

Let me know if you need more details or do not understand.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Thank you, XXXXX XXXXX seen another Vet for a 2nd opinion & yes she does have an enlarged heart along with the bronchitus. We are going to clear up the bronchitus first with antibiotics & Theophylline. She also had blood work done for her heart & down the road will possibly have an ultrasound done. I want to make sure there is no growth in her heart as another of our dogs died of a heart tumor. I don't think it is from heartworm as she takes heartworm pills every month of the year. I pray we are on the right track as this 2nd Vet is more agressive in her treatment. Our dog is 11 & we know that is considered old but we've had other dogs her size live till 14 & 16 so we are praying for the same for her. Thank you for your response. God Bless
