Coughing Dog

Customer Question

My 14yr old American Eskimo is very active and sees our Vet regularly however she has developed a cough that seems to be out of control. The vet says it's not her heart and I have given her Benedril in case it is an allergy. One vet even gave her theophlin. Nothing seems to be helping. Her cough is dry like she is trying to clear her throat and at the end of the spell she kindof gags, although nothing comes up. While she coughs, she walks around with her head down and just coughs and coughs. It seems to be getting worse, but of course when I take her to the vet, she doesn't cough for them.   Do you have any idea what could cause this. Could it really be some kind of allergy and if so what should I give her, she is getting very tired.
Thank you Kathy

Is there a time of day or activity that makes it seem worse?

Well if your vet says its not her heart have you had her checked for worms? Some types of worms go through a stage in their life cycle where they pass through the lungs and are coughed up and swallowed to reside in the gut.
If she hasn't had a stool check done in a while that might be worth doing.
Another possibility has your dog been anywhere it might have picked up Valley Fever? this is a fungal disease that dogs can get and it is present in some parts of California. You can read about the symptoms here http://www.vfce.arizona.edu/ValleyFever/canine/canine.htm#symptoms
If it isn't present in your area and you took your dog on a trip where it is found your vet might not think to look for it unless you told him of your trip.
Also American Eskimo's can have a problem called a collapsing trachea. If your dog is a bit overweight now she is older it might not have bothered her up until now but your vet probably checked for that.
Yes your dog can have allergies too and allergy medicine may be the solution.
from this site http://www.canismajor.com/dog/cough.html#Other
you can see other uncommon causes such as
"Although uncommon, tuberculosis does affect dogs and can cause upper respiratory symptoms. The cough associated with this bacterial infection is moist and productive; dogs may hack up bloody sputum, and suffer from labored breathing. Diagnosis is by x-ray of the lungs. Dogs and humans can infect each other with tuberculosis."
So keep working with your vet and if he can't help consider talking to another vet.
