Yorkshire Terrier: 12 year old..he vomited..diarrhea..pepto-bismol

Customer Question

My dog, a male 12 year old Yorkshire Terrier was fine
Thursday evening. Friday started out ok, but in the
afternoon he vomited and had diarrhea several times.
He was given a dose of Pepto-Bismol. Saturday he was no
better but could keep water down so I took him to the vet.
Red blood count slighty high, temperature high normal,
some blood in the urine, not enough urine for diagnosis,
very weak. Protate was OK. The vet thought it might be a urinary
track infection(?) and gave him a shot of penicilin and an injection
to control diarrhea and vomiting. Also I was given Metronidazole
and Amoxcillin to give him twice a day.
That evening he seemed a little better.I also gave him
Pediolyte and water. Sunday was downhill, getting
progressively worse. I held him for hours. He was weak,
labored breathing, dis-oriented, tremors and could not
stand. He was a fighter but he died late Sunday night.
What happened here!? What could kill my dog so quickly,
renal failure, bowel obstruction ????? What did this?
For my own peace of mind,I'd really like to know.

Did the diarrhea have any blood?

Did the vet run any bloodwork?

There was no blood in the stool at
any time.My Yorkie only weighed 7.5 lbs and the
vet took blood out of his foreleg but she only
got like several drops. She had problems finding
the artery/blood vessel. After leaving the clinic
my dog never had diarrea (nothing left)but when I
would carry him outside he squatted like he had to go
but only a slight amount of opaque mucus
came out.

It is really hard to tell you what happened. It was a very fast process and it is hard to tell if it was organ failure or shock. They do have acute vomiting and diarrhea with certain diseases like pancreatitis...but again they don't die that quickly.

I wish I could help you more...but with the information given, I don't have a particular idea as to why you lost your dog.

I am truly sorry for your loss and my prayers are with you and your family.

Dr.D.A.Vamvakias, Thank you for trying to help me
with a solution. I'll just keep searching for an
answer. It happened so quickly and with no improvement
I'm even thinking that somehow he may have been poisoned.
