This is a hard decision. The bacteria in the mouth and the gingival disease cause a chronic source of both pain and infection for older dogs. If this was a large draining abscess on the outside of the body...would you take the anesthesia risk and have it fixed?
It is a hard decision...at this age anesthesia is a large risk, as is the complications of hypovolemia, hypothermia, etc. with sedation.
The benefits are great with the dental and antibiotics...but the risk..you need to meet face to face with your vet and discuss his plan..such as IV support, to give your dog the best chances of a safe sedation.Dr.V
