lab: around 12 to 13 years old..it’s so bad it shakes the house.

Customer Question

my dog is a blonde lab. he is around 12 to 13 years old. We live right accross from quantico marine base where they fire mortar shells all day long for days at a time. it’s so bad it shakes the house. we can deal with it but zack (my dog ) can’t we have found him in the bathroom trying to get between the commode and the tub. he won’t respond to your voice you have to literally pull him out of the bathroom. he is old and might not be around for long but we don’t wan’t to speed his demise along. we love him very much we have had him since a puppy. when the bombing is taking place he will not leave our side. when we have to leave him alone we are worried he will hurt himself if they start while we are gone. is there any thing we can give him to calm him down and make his days a little more tolerable? either prescription of otc. thank you very much we are desperate

Some people have been having great success using melatonin to control fear of noises in dogs.
I have helped my dog through thunder storm phobia using it and according to the studies other forms of noise phobia can be helped in many dogs by using the melatonin.
Dr's Aronson and Dodman at Tufts worked out a protocol that they said helped about 80% of the dogs so it may be worth a try for you.
Got the following from this golden retriever site for you
http://www.ygrr.org/doginfo/behavior-phobia.html
"Melatonin is sold in capsules and tablets in health food stores, pharmacies and some supermarkets. It is sold in doses as low as 200 micrograms (mcg.). For most dogs, Aronson prescribes 3 milligrams (mg.) In a few cases, dogs weighing over one hundred pounds needed 6 mg. but that was unusual." and
"It's important to read the labels on melatonin bottles very carefully. Some are mixed with herbs or nutrients that may not be safe for dogs. Make sure you buy the correct dosage for your size dog. Remember, there are 1,000 micrograms (mcg.) in a milligram (mg.) so a 200 mcg. pill contains only 1/15 of the amount recommended for a large dog."
My dog got relief from a lower dosage than was suggested.
You have to make sure you get the melatonin that is not mixed with other herbs and one from a good company that puts in the pills what it says is in there on the bottle.
More info on other possible help on that site I listed above but the melatonin worked for my dog really well.
