shepherd mix: 10 years old..always healthy appetite..cant stand

Customer Question

Female dog, 10 years old, shepherd mix, always healthy appetite. Now, suddenly, she doesn't like food anymore. She'll eat one brand of dog food for a day or two, then can't stand it anymore. She'll try to eat it but then spit it out, it is so gross to her. She wants to eat, but something has changed in her so that food tastes bad to her. Also, she has been drinking a lot of water.
This all started about 10 days ago when I gave her aspirin for the first time due to what seemed like arthritis symptoms. The aspirin helped those symptoms but then she threw up, and she has not eaten normally since then.
Also, she tests low on thyroid, has for over a year, and I just started her on thyroid medicine. I don't think the weird food thing is related to the thyroid but thought I should mention it.

The aspirin can cause GI ulcerations, the not eating can be due to the nausea and pain that happens when she trys to eat. When you are going to eat, the stomach releases acids...if there is ulcerations they burn from the acid and the stomach your dog doesn't want to eat.

The other thing that is not normal is the increase of water consumption...because that can be from kidney disease and other more serious problems.

Start with giving your dog Pepcid AC twice a day.  For the food use just rice and chicken or rice and hamburger for the next couple food takes alot to digest.

Even if the dog does better, I would recommend a trip to the vet to address the drinking issue.

Reply to Dr. Vamvakias's Post: Dr. V,

THank you for your quick response. HOw much Pepcid AC should I give her per dose?

Customer: replied 11 years ago.
Forgot to mention, she is 55-60 pounds. Normally, 60, but now at 56, as she is losing weight due to not eating.

Anywhere between 10-15 mg. You can buy at a store, but I don't know the milligram dose of the over the counter. Give it every 12 hours. So sorry for the delay.
