Sick dog

Customer Question

My golden retriever is 4 yrs old quit eating her regular dry food about 3 weeks ago. She would take table scraps, however. I tried changing her dry food to a new brand but she refused it also. She has lost weight but still refuses the dry food and only eats limited other foods that I offer. Just today I cooked up a pork roast for her, and also offered her eggs. She accepted some of the food when I offered it by hand, but would not eat out of the pan. In the last two days some of the food she has tried to burry, covering it with dirt or wood shavings from her bed. Usually she hates to be pinned up and usually stays on our porch or in and out of the house, but today she has retreated to her pin and into her dog house where she never goes unless she has too. I just now offered her to come inside where I can monitor her more closley to see if she vomits or has diarrhea along with her strange eating habit.

Has your golden been spayed? If not when was her last heat cycle?

Customer: replied 11 years ago.
Reply to Dr. Vamvakias's Post: No she has not been spayed. Her last heat cycle was approximately one month ago, as a matter of fact my husband said he saw her with our neighbors dog. I had figured her fertile time had passed so I was surprised to hear this. She has never been bread or had puppies before. My first suspision was that she was pregnant, as I have had some experience with another dog I had. But enouph time has passed that I would think she would be over any morning sickness or reluctancy to eat.

No, I am not concerned about being pregnant.  I am very concerned about Pyometra.  When the cervix becomes soft when they are in heat, bacteria can enter the uterus.  The bacteria then grows and the uterus fills with is usually about 30-45 days after the last heat cycle...and it is life threatening.

I strongly urge you to call your vet now, see if there is anyway to have her seen. Many times we have to start them on IVs and antibiotics...but surgery is the course of treatment if the dog is stable.

I know I can not see her, but I have been practicing for quite awhile and this the classic description.
