my dog smell even after she has been bathed

Customer Question

why does my dog smell? I bath her weekly, she suffers from skin allergies. Could that be why? should i bath her more often. Is there something i can do? Im concerned about drying out her skin, she constantly itches and licks herself. she is about 6 yrs old. I have been around the block with all of her skin allergy problems.steriods, shampoo's, antibiotic. Special foods. Nothing seems to work. If they do its very short term.

It sounds like you have a problem that is secondary to the itch.  It might be a fungal or bacterial infection that is causing the smell.

I suggest that you see a vet for a skin scraping and analysis under the microscope so that you can rule out demodectic mange.

At that time, they can also tell you if she is suffering from a fungal infection or if she needs more meds.

Your next step should be a vet visit.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: thank you for your answer, But she has alreasy been tested for these things and they told me that the tests were negative. should i try and have her tested again? Could they have missed something? I have scheduled the vist with the vet.
I have been to three different Vets for this same problem.Thats what I ment by I have been around the block with all this.

Ahh yes...gotta love the boxer smell. That and their drool. I have one and deal with it also. They tend to have greasier skin. Bathing her once ever 2 weeks is ok as long as you have a very mild shampoo that won't dry her out but thats how I keep mine from getting that sour smell. Check with your vet about which shampoo he recommends which would be the mildest and best for baths every one to two weeks and that should do the trick. Also try a suppliment in her food called Dermacaps. It has also helped mine.
