Customer Question

One of them is loosing all his hair And the other one just broke his ribs but we don't know how and now he has a large scab thing on his back that the doctor said may come off on its own, but he is starting to loose hair as well and the tips of his ears are getting dark
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the cat's name and age?
Customer: The one who is loosing hair is named bear and is 8 months The one who broke his ribs is Leo and he is 9 months
JA: Is there anything else important you think the veterinarian should know about bear?
Customer: They were both sick about a month or so ago because they found dryer sheets which almost killed them but they have been recovery. And I thought bear was completely fine but now he is pooping on the carpet and is loosing hair

What does Bear eat?

What was done for the broken rib?

Did they eat dryer sheets, if not, what made them sick?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Bear eats merrick. I think they just played with the dryer sheets. And for the broken rib he was taken to an urgent care where he stayed for three nights and he's still healing very well

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply.

I want you to apply raw honey to the scab several times a day. You can get it in Walmart.

You can apply raw honey to any sore or irritated areas. It is a remarkable healing agent:

Feed wet food. It contains oil that binds the hair to the shaft.

If Bear has loose stool you can start Kao-pectate (kaolin & pectin formula is the only safe formula for cats) at a dose of 1ml per pound or 1 tablespoon per 15 pounds of body weight every 6 to 8 hours. This is quite safe and will coat her irritated gi tract as well as absorbing bacterial toxins. You can use it for several days until her stools look normal. You can find kao-pectate (or any generic kaolin and pectin formula) at the drug store

He can also take an antihistamine if his hair loss is caused by allergies.

you can add one quarter of a 4 mg chlortrimeten to a tablespoon of baby food chicken or turkey with no onion or garlic.

Give it every 24 hours. It is very tiny so she will not detect it

Any of these are also acceptable:

Benadryl at a dose of 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet given twice daily or

Chlorpheniramine at a dose of 2-4 mg twice a day or

Claritin (Loratadine) at a dose of 2.5-5 mg/cat or

Zyrtec (cetirizine) 5 mg once or twice a day

It is important to ensure that the formulations used contain ONLY the antihistamine and are not combination products (e.g. Claritin-D contains pseudoephedrine, which could cause very significant adverse effects in a cat).

Please let me know how he is doing. Just reply here or if you prefer, we can speak on the phone.
