Customer Question

He has been on Royal Canin SO for close to 2 years. He has become lethargic, not eating, and what little he does eat he throws up. I have several reviews of this food and most of them have the same symptoms. I tool him to the vet this morning and he does not have crystals.
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the cat?
Customer: He has a history of medical issues but I don't think they are related to this issue. He has thrown up 2 times in less than an hour

Hi Pamela

renal patients get very nauseated.

Rub a drop of honey or syrup into his gums to raise his blood sugar in case he is hypoglycemic.

Give him one quarter of a ten mg pepcid a/c (famotidine). I usually add it to a tablespoon of baby food chicken with no onion or garlic Or canned cat food.Every 12 hours.

Remove all dry food and any wet with chunks, pieces or shreds.

Feed only smooth pate canned food or baby food.

Give him chicken baby food warmed. He WILL eat that

Feed only smooth pate canned food or baby food.

If he gets dehydrated give him tuna water drained from the can.

Please let me know how he is doing .

Please be so kind as to rate my answer with positive feedback; that is the only way I receive credit for my assistance. Thank you very much!

I can give you several recipes that were formulated by Hills and distributed to vets before Science diet was on the market. Royal canin makes a very palatable renal food as well.

C/D or H/D recipe - feline (also known as Feline Restricted Mineral and Sodium Diet):
1 lb regular ground beef, cooked
1/4 lb liver (beef, chicken or pork only) cooked
1 cup cooked white rice without salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 t (5g) calcium carbonate (Tums)
1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (salt substitute)

Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the feline minimum daily requirements (MDR) for all vitamins and trace minerals, and 250 mg of taurine per day. This would be available from a veterinary clinic.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield: 1+3/4lbs

Feeding Guide - feed sufficient to maintain normal body weight

Body wt Approx Daily Feeding
5lb 1/5lb
7-8lb 1/4lb
10lb 1/3lb

K/D recipe - feline

(also known as Feline Restricted Protein Diet):

1/4 lb liver (beef, chicken or pork only)

2 cups cooked white rice without salt

2 large hard-cooked eggs

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 t (5g) calcium carbonate (Tums)

1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (salt substitute)

Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the feline minimum daily requirements (MDR) for all vitamins and trace minerals, and 250 mg of taurine per day. This would be available from a veterinary clinic.

Dice and braise the meat, retaining fat. Combine all ingredients and mix well. This mixture is somewhat dry and its palatability can be improved by adding a little water (not milk). Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield: 1+1/4lbs

Feeding Guide - feed sufficient to maintain normal body weight

Body wt Approx Daily Feeding

5lb 1/4lb

7-8lb 1/3lb

10lb 2/5lb

I do just give him pate food. Every once in a while I will give him a little RC Urinary SO dried but he gets a whole can every day. He is on Cosaquin for his arthritis, lysine for his herpes and prednazone for his allergies.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I'm not sure what renal is?
Expert:  Terri replied 2 months ago.

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply.

Give him pepcid. wait 20 minutes for it to take effect and try to feed.

He can also take antihistamines for his allergies.

Royal canin is a renal food given for reduced kidney function

Expert:  Terri replied 2 months ago.

If his kidneys are normal why is he on royal canin?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
He doesn't have reduced kidney function. I explained that in my first post. He is on a urinary diet because he had crystals and got blocked a couple of years ago
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
What exactly does renal mean? What if the food is what's making him sick?
Expert:  Terri replied 2 months ago.

Renal means kidney. I bet that food IS making him sick. He does not need renal food if his kidney function is normal.

The two recipes I sent are to prevent crystals from forming.

After the pepcid which can be given every 12 hours, NO dry food! feed him only smooth pate canned or baby food. That will stop the vomiting. Try the recipes once he is well

Please let me know how he is later
