Customer Question

My kitten ate part of one of my doxycycline. He's about 5 pounds
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. The Veterinarian will know if your kitten will be able to digest that. What is the kitten's name?
Customer: Harry. It's a 100mg pill. I found the casing on the floor but it was empty
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Harry?
Customer: No. Just a regular kitten. He's about two months old

Hi this is Dr. Hill. How many mg tablet? How long ago did he eat it?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
100. About 4 min ago
Expert:  Kelly Hill replied 2 months ago.

Okay. Is he drooling?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
No. No drooling

Doxycycline is typically very bitter and will cause many animals to hyper salivate (drool). It is not typically toxic and is sometimes used for cats. Let me do a calculation and I will be right back.

Expert:  Kelly Hill replied 2 months ago.

So he got about twice the high end of the dose. We don't usually see signs of toxicity until they have received 5 times the dose. Toxic signs are vomiting and diarrhea. However, it is very important that you give him water to wash it down. Doxycycline can sit in the esophagus and cause erosions and esophageal strictures. Do you have a syringe or a small bulb syringe? Can you give him some water with tuna juice to try and wash it down?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Sure. I don't have tuna juice but I can give him water.
Expert:  Kelly Hill replied 2 months ago.

He needs over a tablespoon to prevent it from sticking in esophagus. Sounds crazy, but cats have this issue with doxycycline. Feel free to ask additional questions. Please take time to rate my answer. Take care.
