Hi Ana Maria,

I am sorry Chiquita has this trouble.

Can you please tell me more about her?
How long is she coughing and wheezing?

Does she sneeze too?

What does she eat?

Does anyone in the house smoke?

Indoor kitty?

After your reply please give me a few minutes to read over the info and type detailed answer.

Thanks,

Terri

She has had this problem for about a year. She does not sneeze but, she tries to expel phlegm. I worry about her because she
is overweight. she does eat without problems, she has a quarter cup of dry food(without cereals) and one half of a small can of
wet food (chicken) in the evening. We have a nonsmoking household. I would like to give her maybe a syrup medication

Dear Ana,

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply. The first thing to give Chiquita is 2 drops of honey every 4 hours to sooth her throat. . You can use a dropper or have her lick it off a spoon.

She can have any of these antihistamines:

Benadryl at a dose of 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet given twice daily or

Chlorpheniramine at a dose of 2-4 mg twice a day or

Claritin (Loratadine) at a dose of 2.5-5 mg/cat or

Zyrtec (cetirizine) 5 mg once or twice a day

It is important to ensure that the formulations used contain ONLY the antihistamine and are not combination products (e.g. Claritin-D contains pseudoephedrine, which could cause very significant adverse effects in a cat).

I usually add one quarter of a 4 mg chlortrimeton to a tablespoon of baby food chicken (no onion or garlic) every 24 hours.

Discontinue all dry cat food. Feed smooth pate canned food.

Dry food has more calories than wet. It can cause overweight, diabetes, respiratory issues and other negative things.

Please read articles written by a feline vet:

On wet food she will lose weight naturally.

Try to get a hepa filter to clear the air.

Use only dust free litter.

Please let me know how she does on this program
