My cat struggles when he . He always just outside

Customer Question

My cat struggles when he poops. He always poops just outside the box or sometimes little bits come out around the house. He is also overweight.

Hello,
Thanks so much for requesting me. It is my pleasure to help
Can you please tell me more about your boy?
What foods does he eat?
Is his poop normal, hard or loose?
How much does he weigh?
How long is he having trouble with his poop?
Does he pee in his box?
After your reply please give me a few minutes to type detailed answer
Thanks,
Terri

He eats canned Fancy Feast and dry no grain food.Sometimes it's loose, but mostly normal. He weighs 20 pounds. The outside the box pooping started a few months ago, but I just noticed he was struggling a couple weeks ago. My regular vet is on vacation. He pees inside the box.

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply. I am sorry your baby has this trouble.
I see you are feeding no grain dry but did you know that fancy feast is loaded with corn, gluten, additives and an ingredient called carageenan?

All of the above are very bad for a cats diet.
I suggest you stop all dry food because it is much higher in calories than canned:

Lets start him on natural wet with no additives or grains. Those carbs are putting unnecessary weight on him.He will then lose weight naturally and be more healthy.
Petco has many grain free choices:

He may need some fiber in his diet to replace the carbs so add one quarter of a tsp of metimucil to each can.
He also needs oil to prevent constipation and hairballs:

One more thing, give him one half tsp a day of plain yogurt to add "good" bacteria to his colon.
Please let me know how he does on that program. Just press reply and I will be here for you.
Love,
Terri
