Hello,
I am sorry Slate has this trouble. It is most likely miliary dermatatitis or eosinophic granulma. Both are allergic reactions, usually to a flea bite.

You can apply plain neosporen three times a day. It is safe if he licks and ingests it.
If he is eating well but losing weight, he may be hyperthyroid.
