My cat has not eaten week. I live in an African country

Customer Question

My cat has not eaten for a week. I live in an African country with limited vet services. He has been getting antibiotic injections but has not rallied. He is going to die of starvation. What can I do?

Hello,
I am so sorry Louis is so ill.
Please give me some more info so I can help.
What WAS he eating before he stopped?
Is he drinking anything?
What is the name of the antibiotic?
Does he live indoors or outside?
Can he walk at all?
Does he have arthritis?
After your reply please give me a few minutes to type detailed answer.
Thanks,
Terri

Hello,
I was hoping to hear right back from you so we could talk about Louis.
I will send you my thoughts and you are more than welcome to reply so we can discuss this further.
Not eating for even a few days can result in a dangerous liver condition called hepatic lipidosis:

If he is not drinking he is going to become severely dehydrated.
Try tuna, salmon, chicken, fish, canned cat food, human baby food with no onion or garlic, clam juice, milk, etc.
Warm the food as the smell of cooking food awakens the appetite sensors in the brain.
If you cannot get him to eat perhaps the vet can put in a food tube to at least nourish him till he feels better. The vet can try subQ fluids first to hydrate him as that may motivate him to eat.
Please let me know what happens. Just reply with any thoughts you may have. If I am not online since we are in different time zones I will reply the minute I sign on.
Love,
Terri
