Customer Question

Hello,

My cat Cuddles has a chronic sinus infection. She has been on Orbax, Clavimox (but d/c'd due to vomiting) and finally Baytril for about three weeks. The vet said that she will probably have to be one week on the antibiotics and one week off. The last dose of the Baytril was today. Thank goodness, as I thought my cat was turning into an alligator! She is still sneezing, although she has a very long history (like 12 plus years) of allergy like symptoms. I think the Baytril helped, and doesn't seem to have green discharge, but is sneezing. Can I give her Chlorpherniramine Maleate? What dosage? I think it was 1/4 of a 4 mg pill, but that may have been a different antihistamine. I just want her to be comfortable until I talk to the vet on Monday. Thanks! Renee

Hello and thank you for asking your question. My name isXXXXX will try to help.

Yes, the dosage of chlopheniramine is 1/4 of a 4mg tablet every 12 hours.

Sometimes, putting steroid drops into the nose, can help with the inflammation. That is something you can discuss with your vet. We often just use the eye drops that contain antibiotics, and a steroid, and put that into the nose because that seems to be effective and also less expensive then buying one of the human steroid nasal sprays at the drug store.

You can also use saline nasal drops. These helps flush the nasal passages as well as soothe the nasal membranes. Try 1-2 drops, in each nostril, twice a day.

If baytril is not getting the job done, the antibiotic "azithromycin" works well too.

I hope this helps.

Thank you Dr. Gabby. I have Flonase that I use for myself. Could I use this on her?? I have tried the Neo-Synepherin that the vet told me to use when she is congested, but not today. When I did it before it caused her to sneeze profusely! I am looking for an antibiotic to use other than Baytril because she hates it, and I hate to put her through that every day, especially since I get clawed or bit in the process. Does the Azithromycin come in a liquid? She has no problem taking the Orbax, but it doesn't seem to keep the infection under control. Looking for a more palatable LIQUID that I can give her in a syringe. Thanks! I will give her the 1/4 pill of the antihistamine now.

Yes, azithromycin comes in a liquid.

You may be able to get a compounding pharmacy to make the baytril into a liquid.

Compounding pharmacies can add flavoring to most medications.

I use wickliffe or wedgewood compounding pharmacies.

Yes, you can use flonase on her. One-two drops once a day. You will have to put it in a syringe and use the syringe to get it into her nose.

Neosynephrine cause rebound congestion after two days of use.

So only use it every once in a while.

You're awesome! I agree about the Neo-Synephrine from a human standpoint. I was concerned about that. I never tried it more than once because she clearly hated it. The Baytril worked well on the infection, and she seems great, except for the sneezing. I will look into having the Baytril compounded and also maybe trying the Azithromycin liquid. That is great about the Flonase--providing I can get it in her nose. She is an old cat and you can't fool her, no way, no how. Thanks so much!!

You are welcome : ) You can not fool young cats either.

Hi,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Cuddles. How is everything going?

Dr. Gabby

Thank you so much for your kindness in following up about Cuddles! I appreciate you asking. I took her to the vet this morning, as her congestion was bad during the night, and I got scared. Luckily, the vet that treats her was able to fit us in. He was sick himself, so I didn't bombard him with too many questions. He gave her a shot of an antibiotic called Convenia. He said it may or may not work. Should last from 10 to 14 days. He said we could compound the Baytril like you said, or continue on this. At this rate, it could get quite expensive, but like I told him, I can't pick a day yet that I am ready to let her go. She seems pretty good since the shot. Thank you so much for asking about her. Renee
