Hi,
Coughing in cats can be from a variety of underlying problems. Feline asthma is the first thing that comes to mind at this age. This disease is fairly common in cats, and is usually managed with corticosteroids. Here is a link to a whole website about this:
http://www.felineasthma.org/overview/index.htm
Other diseases that can cause coughing and wheezing include cardiomyopathy, heartworm infection, lungworms, cancer, and more. I would recommend a visit to your vet as soon as you are able. An exam and x-ray would be in order to rule out some of these. I would recommend having a fecal sample checked, too, if that hasn't been done recently. A blood profile would be a good idea as well.
If you have further questions let me know. Please do not leave me a feedback rating until you are completely satisfied with your answer. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Lynn
