Customer Question

why is my cat drooling, with swollen lymph glands(I think), for 2 days now. Today she is clawing at her mouth, and not eating her food. Her lips(?) are reddish. The day I first noticed these symptoms she had come running as if hurt or frightened severely- We live in the country and there are snakes and spiders galore- as well as many harmful plants to cats (far too many to remove all). Could these symptoms be those of poisoning or perhaps even a bad tooth ?

Optional Information:
Pet's Gender: Female
Pet's Age: 2

Already Tried:
first 2 days Amoxicillan 40mg. x2 daily. today I had to give it to her in water from can of Tuna.

Hi there!

My name is XXXX, XXX I would be glad to help you with your issue.

This very well could be caused by a dental issue. Sometimes a tooth can get abscessed and infected, causing a cat to have pain when chewing, drooling, pawing at the mouth, and swollen lymph nodes near the site of infection.

If this is the case, it can be determined by a vet doing a through dental examination to see if there is any sign of infection inside the mouth. If there is an abscessed tooth, your vet will have to do a dental to extract the tooth, as antibiotics won't get rid of the problem completely.

If there are no signs of dental infection, your vet will be able to do a fine needle aspirate on the lymph nodes and some bloodwork to make sure there there aren't any other more serious issues going on with your kitty.

If you have any follow-up questions or concerns, please feel free to hit "reply", and I would be glad to address them for you. Otherwise, I hope your girl is on the road to getting better soon!
