Customer Question

My cat keeps gagging but does not throw up. She eats drinks and poops well. But gags a lot!

How long is she gagging like this?

What does she eat?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
She eats dry food only. She has been doing this 8 or 9 days. It was only a couple times a day at first. Now it's several times an hour.

Dear friend,

I am sorry your baby is having trouble.

Check inside her mouth for a bad tooth or stuck item.

If she eats only dry food that may be the culprit. Please read:

Cod liver oil is not good for cats. Instead give her tuna, salmon or sardine oil @ one tsp a day.

Cats are obligate carnivores meant to eat meat.

Add some canned food for her. It prevents hairballs:

Here is a natural product:

Cats are attracted to smelly foods - the stronger the better. If she wants tuna, give it to her You can also try fancy feast, clam juice or baby food.

Human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

If the gagging continues her teeth should be checked.

Please let me know how she is doing. I will always be here for you.

I hope she feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

There is nothing wrong with her teeth! Is that the best you can do? Really!

Expert:  Terri replied 5 years ago.

I am sorry. I think she is gagging due to one of these reasons

1. Something stuck in her mouth

2. A bad tooth

3. Hairball

4. Allergy to dry food

Can you please try some canned food and let me know if she stops gagging?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Same food, given oil for a week for possible hairball. Teeth are in good shape with little plaque. No swelling or odour. Unless something is caught in her throat. It is not in her mouth. Don't you think I did all I could do before I asked you?

Expert:  Terri replied 5 years ago.

I think you are a VERY attentive kitty owner that has tried very hard to help the problem.

You only asked here because she is still gagging.

I know you are worried about your baby so I understand why you are upset.

Cod liver oil will not relieve her gagging. If its a hairball try the natural product I listed or one of the oils I recommended.

Canned food contains oil so it prevents hairballs naturally.

It is also possible she swallowed something that is irritating her throat.

You can feed her some tuna in oil and see if she stops gagging. It will soothe her throat.

Please write back and let me know what happens.
