Hi, thanks for your question. Dexamethasone is a potent steroid, and should only be used if absolutely necessary for occasional relief of severe allergic problems such as dermatitis or respiratory problems. There is a wide dose range recommended, anywhere from 0.2 mg per pound, up to 2 mg per pound, depending on the particulars of the situation. In general, lower doses are safe and typically effective for temporary relief from environmental allergies. An 8 pound cat would typically receive 1.6 mg up to 16 mg. A common dose for an average cat is 4 mg, which is 1 cc of Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate.
