Is it safe to use olive leaf extract on cats. What dose do you give. My cat has runny nose and discharge she was born with it, it is continuous - vet says it will never get over it. She is 13 years old now but seems to be suffering at the moment and I would like to try to clear her congestion. She has also always suffered from allergies and itchy skin which she scratches too much.
Optional Information: Age: 12; Female; Breed: tortiosshell Already Tried: I have applied Lucas PawPaw ointment to the itchy (broken) skin. The PawPaw jar says "a local topical application for boils, burns, chaffings, cuts, cracked skin, gravel rash, splinters, open wounds, insect bites and nappy rash, the ointment relieves and cleanses". Contains potassium sorbate 0.1mg/g as preservative.{Does not specify that it is ok for animals} I am giving Bisolvon chesty for the nasal discharge(prescribed by a vet BUT which I get from the chemist cos the vet charges too much for the same product) each tablet contains bromhexine hydrochloride 8 mg I usually give 1 tab in the morn and 1 at night. I cannot afford to take her to the vet I have 13 other cats - all dumped and abandoned animals that I have taken in with permission from my local council. All cats are de-sexed. I would like to give the olive leaf to all my cats as a general tonic if it is not harmful and would be good for their immune systems and general health? The oldest cat is 20 years old and the youngest is 13 years old, others in between. Thank you
Hello Susie, Olive leaf extract (olive oil) is safe to give to your cats. Some studies show that it has stong anti-oxidant effects. There is also some evidence that it has anti-viral properties as well. I you would like to try it the dose would be 1/2 teaspoon per cat per day. It may not help, but it won't hurt. Let me know if you need anything else.
