We just lost our cat who had FIV and lived a good life with us. How long do we need to wait before getting a new kitten or cat? Do we need to throw out all of KiKi's things and get new stuff?
Age: 9; Female; Breed: Tabby Already Tried: Pet is deceased but looking to get new member of the family.
Thanks for the questionCustomerSorry to hear about Kiki .....In direct answer to your question : You can get a new kitten or cat as soon as you like and you need not throw out any of Kiki's things. You see the main mode of transmission of FIV is through bite wounds, this is the way it spreads from one cat to another under almost all circumstances. The exception is when it is transmitted from an infected mother cat to her kittens, either in the womb or through the milk.Casual social contact which does not involve biting does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading FIV, and they are not thought to ever catch it from the environment. If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.Scott Nimmo BVMS MRCVS
