What can I give my cat to make him drowsy or knock him out ...

Customer Question

What can I give my cat to make him drowsy or knock him out so that I can trim his back claws? They are so long and he keeps scratching his eyes with them. I have tried to trim them and he goes crazy.

Cats metabolize medications far differently than many other animals, including dogs and people. They lack certain essential enzymes in their liver necessary for breaking down the drugs into less toxic by-products. There are NO safe over-the-counter medications to use for sedation in cats. In fact, many OTC products (for sedation, pain relief, etc.) can actually KILL a cat.
Your best bet is to call your veterinarian and explain your situation. A sedative called acepromazine may be dispensed, via prescription. This will help take the edge off and allow you to trim his claws.
You could also schedule an appointment with your vet (usually it would be a technician appointment for a nominal fee like $5- 10) or a groomer to have his claws done.
Hope this was helpful.
