My cat is acting strange!!!!!!!!

Customer Question

my cat has started walking backwards and then seems to be confused. He walks away kinda limping on the rear paws, but when I look and squeeze them he is fine. What could this mean?

Does your cat seem to be walking around in circles? Or do his eyes seem to be twitching ( I mean do they look like they are going around in circles in any way? Does he have feeling in his back paws?

Reply to Mary Banks's Post: What he does is follow me and then gets confused or something and ends up backing up a few feet into a wall or whatever and then goes limping off. He seems to have feeling in his paws and hind legs. His puples are really big, but I think that is normal. He eats and drinks fine, vomits quite frequently, but that is also normal for him (should have named him Ralph) He is only 8 years old. I noticed this for the first time last night and didn't say anything, but when I got home from work today both my Husband and son told me it happened today. Strange? Do you think it could be something bad?

Enlarged pupils, when they are not normally enlarged, can indicated a thyroid, liver or kidney disease. The retinas swell as a secondary issue to the disease and this can cause blindness. If you treat it quickly, you can stop the swelling before the retinas detatch causing permanent blindness.

Blindness could be the reason for the confusion and following. If only partial site is gone, it can be a pretty scary experience.

You should take your kitty in to see the vet tommrow if you can.

Okay, The vet was closed today and he is acting fine again. I don't know what to do now.

Do you think he could be Diabetic or possibly something worse? He is a large cat about 15 pounds. I also have another cat, a dog (puggle) and 2 red ear slider turtles.
Expert:  Tammy F. replied 11 years ago.

This paw problem is often a symptom of diabetes. With diabetes, the feet and hands of people will get tingly and not have as much feeling. Pets react in much the same way.

If he is better today, this might BE a blood sugar issue that will fluctuate.

No matter what, you really need to see the vet to have this checked as soon as you can. Keep some karo syrup on hand in case his blood sugar drops dangerously low. You can use a little on the tongue to bring him back around.

Does this help more?

  • I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there. Alice H. Jacksonville, Fl.
