Kitten Nursing

Customer Question

I have 2 kittens [littermates], they are about 8 weeks old. The "runt" named Pee Wee is always sucking on my shirt, he eats solid foods just fine, but seems to have the need to nurse. Is this something I should allow him to do or discourage this behaviour? Thanks

I had a cat I rescued at 6 months of age. She sucked on my shirt all the time. She did this for many years and finally quit at about age 16! She lived to be 22. It never bothered me so I just let her. She would "knead" sometimes, which I did discourage as she had claws.
Could be he needs to do this to feel secure. That was what my vet told me caused Smudge's sucking habit.
IF it bothers you then you might want to discourage it otherwise let him.

Reply to Viv Graves's Post: Dear Kittylatte, thanks so much for your prompt reply. I guess common sense told me that this was the correct answer, nice to get feedback from someone with more experience. Probably the reason he is the "runt" is because the stronger siblings pushed him away. Pee Wees sister is larger and doesn't show this type of "need". Yes, he does knead while he is sucking but his little claws are never extended. These babies had been "dumped" and were saved by a local pet rescue. Thanks again Sandy

  • I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there. Alice H. Jacksonville, Fl.
