Feline herpes is one of 3 of the main upper respiratory infections that kittens/cats deal with. It is shed during stressful events. It is transmissible thru contact, fomites, human contact, and aerosol. It is likely that the adult cat is a carrier but no active infection at this time.
The kitten should be vaccinated for FHV before contact...and remind the other roommate that just the introduction of a new kitten will stress the cat out enough that a relapse of signs may occur.
