My vet gave me Metacam (oral) to give my cat for 7 days. Now my cat has kidney failure. Should the vet treat him for free as long as he has left? The box with the medicine clearly says "for dogs only" under the vets instruction. On the internet this medicine seemed only to be used for cats after surgery and given once only by syringe. Cornelia
Cornela,
The FDA has approved Metacam for cats, the use varies. If you can give me the dose you have been giving (and read the box for the mg/ml) I can tell you if it was above the recommended dose, but metacam is used with cats.
You need to remember as well that all animals/humans respond differently to medications. People can go into liver failure with simple Tylenol...so there is never a 100% guarantee with anything. I am sorry you are dealing with this. I have read of another case of a cat going into kidney failure but responded well to treatment.
Again, if you want to know if the actual dose is correct, please respond.

Reply to Dr. Vamvakias's Post: Metacam 1.5mg/ml oral suspension 3 drops by mouth daily for three days (10ml). Thanks for your help Cornelia
I just sent you a private message, but here is what I wrote...hope it helps!
I just wanted to you to know the dose was not too high. I think the vet gave a good drug, I use it often, and your cat's body reacted to it. I am sorry, as I am sure your vet is too. He needs to make sure he reports this to the company so that if there is a problem documented that they put more warnings to other vets.

Still okay...although drops are hard to measure...I still think it was in the dose range.
